I’ve never participated in any sosrt of blog before so I am not sure if this is the prper way to go. I am old (75) and just trying to get along with a computer. My knowledge is VERY limited and I know nothing of many of the terms I’ve seen. I have an IMac that is obsolescent and a PC that is still running Windows 98. Is the Linux system something that would be useable for someone like myself. I mostly write a few letters and keep in touch with frieds and relatives via e-mail. My IMac is becoming very limited by being unable to download very much and my PC is dieing of old age. Would you please advise me at my e-mail address?
To John, sorry that I have not been in touch, I have been sick. To answer your question, I think your best choice for a Linux OS is Ubuntu, it’s the easiest to use and everything you need is already included, go to the Ubuntu web site at ubuntu.com and download it or request a free CD!!!
I think Puppy Linux is worth looking into. So much in such a small package. I have also recently looked into Mint Linux and OpenGEU, which are both based on Ubuntu (I think). OpenGEU has some fancy graphical elements.
My other favorite thing to use Linux for is my PVR/DVR box running MythBuntu – a meld of MythTV and Ubuntu. It is very easy to set up and makes a great alternative to either a Tivo box (also excellent) or your cable company’s own DVR/PVR (Personal Video Recorder – the modern day equivalent of the VCR).
I believe it is worth mentioning (for hudsonman35 and other curious folks) that many of the Linux distributions can be downloaded (or ordered) as a complete Live Linux CD environment, where you can run the operating system right from a cd, without disturbing your current computer’s software (or just to save having to install the OS at first).
Puppy Linux is great because it is very small, has many easy-to-use installation and/or running live options, and it is very nearly complete. Of course, a 4 gigabyte plus install of one of the major versions is going to have a lot more, but you’d be suprised what Puppy does include.
It is highly recommended to read about Linux to learn some terms that are not exact matches to terms and operations in Mac or Windows, and some shorthand that the Linux-experienced often use to talk about things that might otherwise be stated in terms that DOS/Windows/Mac users could understand more easily. Some other things simply don’t come into paly except for with Linux, so ther is another reason to do some reading.
